The Opportunity

Join our dynamic team as a Senior Environmental Scientist, reporting to the New South Wales Contaminated Land Management Team Manager. In this role, you’ll lead technical initiatives for NSW while contributing to national projects for the right candidate. You'll oversee or provide technical input to diverse contaminated land management and regulatory compliance projects, working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and business development professionals.

The following key responsibilities will be expected from a candidate considered for this role:

  • Project Management: Oversee a diverse portfolio of contaminated land assessment and remediation projects, ensuring timely delivery and adherence to quality standards.
  • Budget and Deliverables Management: Maintain clear oversight of project budgets, timelines, and deliverables, ensuring efficient use of resources and client satisfaction.
  • Environmental Site Assessments & Investigations: Lead comprehensive site assessments and investigations, identifying environmental risks and providing actionable solutions.
  • Data Analysis & Reporting: Analyse and interpret complex environmental data, preparing detailed technical reports that support decision-making and regulatory compliance.
  • Knowledge of Legislation: Apply a thorough understanding of NSW’s contaminated land legislation to guide project execution and ensure legal and environmental compliance.
  • Leadership & Mentorship: Coach and mentor junior staff, fostering a collaborative and supportive team environment that encourages professional growth.
  • Proposal and Tender Contributions: Actively contribute to the preparation of high-quality proposals and tenders, securing new business and driving the success of the company.
  • Client Relationship Management: Demonstrate a strong ability to build and maintain lasting client relationships, ensuring satisfaction and repeat business.

About You

To succeed in this role, you will have a proven track record in the technical delivery of a wide range of contaminated land assessment and remediation projects across various sectors, working with both public and private clients. You will be responsible for managing projects in industries such as oil and gas, power utilities, local and state government agencies, defence, mining, and major infrastructure works.

You will possess strong written communication skills, enabling you to effectively scope and price complex proposals and produce detailed, technically accurate reports. In addition, you will have an in-depth understanding and practical experience in applying National and State Contaminated Land Management Regulations and Guidance, including for Underground Petroleum Storage Systems (UPSS) and Development Approvals.

Previous experience working within a team of contaminated land professionals in a multi-disciplinary consultancy is essential, as you will be required to closely collaborate with engineering and environmental experts to deliver comprehensive solutions.

 

Desired Attributes/Credentials

  • A relevant degree in environmental engineering or environmental science.
  • Experience (minimum 7 years’) in the environmental consulting industry.
  • Demonstrated success managing contaminated land assessment and remediation projects.
  • Exceptional verbal communication, technical report writing and peer review skills.
  • Demonstrated health and safety leadership.
  • Industry recognition through certification, accreditation and/or active participation in related industry associations. CEnvP Site Contamination Specialist certification or Licensed Asbestos Assessor (LAA), or current progression towards this, will be considered
  • A track record of winning repeat work with clients, or developing business with new clients, will be considered favourably.
